A Few Questions

What are some authors/books/events that have been influential to your work?

So. Many. I read a lot of Bernard Cornwell growing up, though I don’t read his stuff now. Doing creative writing at university was pretty much fundamental to establishing who I am today. And Neil Gaiman’s short story Troll Bridge. It floored me the first time I read it, and from then on, I’ve been hooked on short fiction.

How do you see writing fitting in (or not) within the current world of books?

My first book was a fantasy short story collection, around 40,000 words long, in which all the stories took place in the same world and in chronological order. Too cohesive to be a real short story collection, but not quite a novel or a novella, either. I knew no traditional publisher would have any interest in a project like that, so I set about publishing it myself. The manuscript I’ve just finished has a very similar format, too; so, I guess I’m on a weird fringe, targeting the small group of people who like that sort of book. I’m happy to be here, though, because it gives me creative freedom.

What are you currently working on?

I’ve been co-writing a series of shorts with someone else, and generally writing and submitting shorts to publishers and magazines I’m interested in. Hopefully, eventually, one day… I will revisit the Shield Road, universe, but that’s some time away yet.

What has/have been your proudest moment/s as a writer?

Honestly? When I get to see my prose on the page alongside other people's. It’s a thrill to be alongside such talented people, and I’m always humbled and amazed by it.

What books/authors are you currently reading or really into?

I’m a big nonfiction reader, and at the moment, my book of choice is Felicia Day’s autobiography, You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost): A Memoir. It’s funny, quirky, and a beautiful delve into the nerd scene of the pre-2010s, when nerd-dom was still very much a dark, weird corner of society that so-called ‘normal’ people had nothing to do with.
