The Shortcut
Richard Matheson’s books, particularly I Am Legend and Donald Westlake’s Parker novels really influence my style. I love how straightforward they are. There is a certain economy to their writing, and they can evoke so much without getting overly flowery.
How do you see your writing fitting in (or not) within the current world of books?
I’d say most of my novels fit fairly well in the mainstream. The Friday Night Frights series does do its own thing at times but nothing necessarily out there that would turn off those looking for YA or adult horror. The Astrogirl novels are pretty standard superhero sci-fi that wouldn’t be out of place on the big screen, either.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on a standalone horror novel set during Christmas in the 1990s that skews darker and more adult than the Friday Night Frights series. There’s also a crime novel and two more fantasy novels I have on the back burner and have been working on them as time permits. I’m having a real fun time with the fantasy novels as they are very different from what I usually write. They’re based around a character I played in D&D so it is nice to give them some further adventures.
What has/have been your proudest moment/s as a writer?
Two moments stand out in particular. The first is finishing my first book. After years of stopping and starting a bunch of different novels, it was a thrill to finally write “THE END” in a complete work that I was going to publish. The second was getting messages on social media by someone who said they enjoyed my novels and that their kid did too. When you finally put a book out there, you always hope that someone finds it and it resonates with them and to hear it actually happened is a really nice feeling.
What books/authors are you currently reading or really into?
I’m currently reading Elvira’s memoir. On the fiction side of things, I’ve been reading a bit of Duane Swierczynski’s crime novels. I’ve read a bunch of his work in comics and wanted to check out his books as he is a talented dude. Oh and Brian Berry’s horror novels. They’re usually pretty gnarly and gory, like 70s-80s Italian horror movies but in book form.
