A Few Questions with Melissa Rose Rogers
Melissa Rose Rogers is a featured author in the upcoming anthology Once Upon Another Time: Fresh Tales from the Far Side of Fantasy, an international publication available for free from Amazon on May 23, 2022.
Story in the Anthology:
Veiled Reflections: A Retelling of Eros and Psyche
The books that have been most influential to my work are Robin McKinley's The Hero and the Crown (due to sheer number of times that I've read this piece) and N.K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. I think my voice in writing is most similar to Patricia C. Wrede and Robin Hobb, but that's just my opinion. I have a passion for myths, folklore, and wonder tales and that is reflected in my work.
Another big influence in my work is my heritage and my hometown. I grew up in Tampa, FL, and couldn't help but love the ocean. My grandmother was from the Bay Islands of Honduras, and seeing her beautiful country as an adult, and visiting other Caribbean islands on scuba diving trips, was the inspiration for my contemporary fantasy Deeper Than Blood (which could use more beta readers).
How do you see your writing fitting in (or not) within the current world of books?
I call myself a spec. fic author because if someone has only read my short stories, then my novels would probably throw them for a loop. My novel length pieces are high fantasy and contemporary fantasy, but my short stories run the gamut from hard science fiction to post-apocalyptic.

What are you currently working on?
At this time I'm working on:
- A mockumentary screenplay that's like The Office meets The Walking Dead
- Tormented Tundra (working title), a high fantasy piece—"Veiled Reflections" is a bit of a prologue to it
- Various short stories!
- Slowly beta reading for others (I'm terribly slow)
- Slowly revising Threads of Fate, another high fantasy book
What has/have been your proudest moment/s as a writer?
My proudest moment has to be having my work "Fur of White, Frosty Night" included in Bear Creek Gazette's Cryptids publication in issue 3. That piece was a labor of love, and I am so proud to share the patois and folklore of Western North Carolina, where I lived for many years, with the wider world.
What books/authors are you currently reading or really into?
At this time I'm reading, fellow anthologists, Cix & Vic Zander's Fulcra: The Witness, and I'm deeply enjoying it. I would also recommend Beer! Beer! Beer! by Hugo Award winning Avram Davidson (published posthumously this past winter).
